TCU women’s golf opened the NCAA Waco Regional in 10th place, nine shots outside the top-five cutline after a tough first round.

TCU women’s golf has ground to make up after a difficult opening round at the NCAA Waco Regional.

The Horned Frogs finished Monday at 15 over par at Ridgewood Country Club, leaving them in 10th place after the first day of regional play.

TCU is nine shots behind Tulsa, which currently holds the fifth and final qualifying spot for the NCAA National Championships.

It wasn’t the start TCU wanted. The Frogs struggled early after teeing off on the front nine, giving up six strokes through the first six holes and reaching the turn at 9 over.

Still, they found a small spark late by playing holes 17 and 18 without a bogey, giving themselves something to build on heading into Tuesday.

Kirstin Angosta delivered TCU’s best round of the day. She finished at 2 over with a 72, closing strong with birdies on her final two holes.

Angosta played her second nine in 1-under 34 and went par or better from the 13th hole on. She enters the second round tied for 21st.

Sofie Dimitrova also gave the Frogs a steady round from the No. 5 spot in the lineup. She opened with a birdie and followed with eight straight pars, putting herself near the top of the leaderboard early.

Dimitrova eventually signed for a 3-over 73, good for a tie for 29th.

Camille Min-Gaultier posted a 74, while Gracie McGovern shot 76 and Sofia Barroso Sá finished with an 80.

SMU leads the 12-team field at 3 under, followed by Texas A&M and Oregon at even par. Tennessee sits fourth at 2 over, with Tulsa at 6 over.

TCU returns Tuesday at 8:50 a.m., paired with Northern Arizona and Prairie View A&M.
