New details reveal the severity of a locker room altercation that left a Horned Frog hospitalized and led to felony assault charges for a star transfer.
The situation surrounding the TCU football program has taken another serious turn following new details about an August locker room incident involving former Horned Frogs safety Jacob Fields and wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma.
According to a report from The Dallas Morning News, Ezukanma was hospitalized for three days after the altercation and suffered a brain bleed, a concussion, and a shoulder injury.
The injuries reportedly stemmed from an incident involving Fields, who was subsequently dismissed from the TCU football program.
Fields, who transferred to TCU from Louisiana Tech, had been expected to play an important role in the Horned Frogs' secondary this season.
He arrived in Fort Worth after earning Conference USA Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors and was viewed as a potential replacement for Bud Clark, who went on to the NFL in the draft.
Instead, his time with the program ended before the season began.
The incident reportedly occurred on Aug. 13 inside the TCU football facility. TCU general manager Ryan Dorchester contacted campus police the following day, according to reports.
Fields was dismissed from the team shortly afterward for what the school described as a violation of team rules.
The situation became even more significant after Fields turned himself in to authorities on Aug. 30. He is facing a charge of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury in connection with the incident.
For TCU, the situation represents a difficult distraction at the beginning of a season in which expectations were already high.
Ezukanma was expected to be an important piece of the Horned Frogs' offense in his third season with TCU.
However, his availability became a major question following the incident, and he obviously did not play in TCU's season-opening matchup against North Carolina in Dublin.
Head coach Sonny Dykes addressed the situation publicly before the opener, calling the incident uncharacteristic and emphasizing the importance of learning from what happened.
The football season will continue, but the incident has left a cloud over the program during its opening weeks.
TCU now has to move forward without Fields while hoping Ezukanma can make a full recovery. Whatever happens on the field this season, the health and well-being of the players involved will remain far more important than any result.
