TCU edge rusher Koron Hayward earns Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after three sacks and five tackles in the Horned Frogs' dominant 17-6 victory over Baylor.

TCU football needed somebody to deliver a statement against Baylor, and edge rusher Koron Hayward answered with the most dominant performance of his college career.

Hayward earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors Monday after recording three sacks and five solo tackles in the Horned Frogs' 17-6 victory over Baylor on Saturday night at McLane Stadium.

The Jacksonville, Florida, native didn't simply pressure Bears quarterback DJ Lagway. He repeatedly disrupted Baylor's offense and helped TCU secure a badly needed conference victory.

His three sacks were the most by any Power Four player during Week 7, making him the first Horned Frog to reach that mark in a single game since 2022.

Hayward also established a career high with five tackles and was the only FBS defender nationally to register five solo tackles and three sacks during the weekend.

For TCU, those numbers translated into something even more important: a defensive performance that completely changed the rivalry game's complexion.

The Horned Frogs held Baylor without a touchdown, surrendered just 54 rushing yards and limited the Bears to six successful conversions on 21 third-down attempts.

TCU's defense also recorded four sacks, with Hayward responsible for three of them. Those sacks cost Baylor 23 yards, and Hayward added a forced fumble to his impressive stat line.

Baylor managed just two field goals despite running 87 offensive plays.

That's the kind of performance TCU desperately needed after entering the game with consecutive Big 12 losses.

The Horned Frogs improved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while Baylor fell to 4-2 and 2-1.

Hayward wasn't the only defensive standout.

Jamel Johnson intercepted Lagway in the third quarter, while CJ Woodford collected TCU's other sack. The Horned Frogs also forced two turnovers on downs during the closing minutes to preserve their second-half shutout.

The performance was particularly meaningful for Hayward, who transferred to TCU after playing at Western Kentucky.

He previously earned Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week recognition in 2025, making Monday's announcement his second career weekly conference honor and first in the Big 12.

Hayward also joins a growing list of TCU players receiving individual recognition this season, including quarterback Jaden Craig, punter John Hoyet Chance and tight end Kari Ashley.

But individual honors only matter so much if they don't translate into victories.

Against Baylor, Hayward's relentless pressure helped deliver exactly that.

And after a difficult opening stretch in conference play, TCU may have discovered something it desperately needed: a defensive playmaker capable of taking over a football game.
