LUBBOCK - The No. 12-ranked TCU Horned Frogs had strong showings from the dynamic duo of Marta Suarez and Olivia Miles, but couldn't escape with a road win over No. 21 Texas Tech, falling 62-60 at United Supermarkets Arena on Sunday.
Suarez completed her sixth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Miles was the catalyst on offense early before finishing with 15 points of her own. They combined to produce half of the Horned Frogs' offensive production.
However, the Lady Raiders had a season-best showing from senior guard Snudda Collins, who posted a tied-career-high 28 points off the bench to guide Texas Tech out of a shooting slump that had allowed TCU to lead the majority of the game.
Poor perimeter defense from the Frogs led to Texas Tech hitting four of its nine three-pointers in the fourth quarter to get the comeback win. While TCU also hit four shots from beyond the arc in the final period, turnovers proved too costly to overcome in the raucaus road environment.
TCU also only got to the free throw line five times, making three. Conversely, the Lady Raiders hit 13-of-17 shots from the charity stripe.
After building an advantage as large as seven in the second half and leading for nearly 80 percent of the game, TCU fell behind in the final minute as Collins knocked down one of her three triples to put Texas Tech in front with half a minute remaining.
Miles - who had been quiet throughout the middle portions of the game - tried to add to her fourth-quarter scoring run but couldn't connect on a fadeaway three in the deep corner that would have tied the game.
The Horned Frogs fall to 20-3 on the season, but remain at the top of the Big 12 with an 8-2 mark, the least amount of conference losses in the league. Texas Tech improves to a conference-high in wins at 21-3 overall, 8-3 in Big 12 play.
While the Frogs will still be contenders the rest of the way, they fail to put together another winning streak to grow their advantage in the conference standings.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech responds from dropping three of their last four to now build a resume that includes wins over TCU, Baylor and West Virginia - three of the top four teams in the conference.
The Horned Frogs try to rebound from the close road loss by returning home to face Houston in Fort Worth on Wednesday Feb. 4.
