Among the spring acquisitions for the 2026 Tennessee Volunteers was former Penn State defensive linemen Xavier Gilliam.

With a full season of experience playing in the star-studded Big 10 conference, Gilliam has begun to carve out an important role with his new Volunteers squad through two weeks of spring camp.

Gilliam, no stranger to new Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, played for the coach and his staff last season at Penn State after redshirting for the Nittany Lions in 2024.

As a key contributor to Knowles’ PSU defense, Gilliam played in all 13 games last year, making two starting appearances.

Looking to build off a season where he notched 15 tackles, 0.5 sacks, one forced fumble and a blocked field goal, the decision to follow the DC to Knoxville was an easy choice for the redshirt sophomore.

“I really like the defense,” Gilliam said. “Also, Tennessee is a great opportunity,” he added.

As a veteran in Knowles' scheme, Gilliam has taken the opportunity to help players along the way in adopting a new defensive system– despite being the new kid on the block in Knoxville.

“It's pretty cool seeing how everybody picks up things differently. We got some guys that are picking it up really fast which is just very promising and good to see,” Gilliam said.

Offering guidance to both unfamiliar and younger players, Gilliam has assumed a leadership position during this important transition for the Vols’ defense.

“Sharing my input,” Gilliam said, has been a key to helping bridge the gap. “I am also one of the older guys in the room,” he noted, in reference to helping mentor younger players in spring camp.

Carrying a productive 2025 season in State College over to Knoxville this fall, Gilliam has remained inspired and driven to become a better player in anticipation for his first year with Tennessee, beginning with the Orange & White game next month at Neyland Stadium.

“I got a lot more to show,” Gilliam said. “You're going to see something in the spring game, and you're going to see a lot in the season.”

Rather than targeting a specific component of his game, in order to achieve optimal output in the 2026 season, Gilliam has worked to become an all-around better player during the offseason.

“All things,” the DL said on what he’s worked to improve. “Getting stronger, my athleticism, and really just getting more football smart.”

As spring camp progresses, Gilliam will continue to fight for a solidified position on the Volunteers defensive line for next season.
