Chaz Coleman, an elite edge rusher who came to Tennessee after his freshman year at Penn State, has been medically disqualified and is no longer a part of the team.

Knox News quoted a UT spokesperson on the situation.

Coleman came to the Vols with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. He was set to be a key piece of Knowles' attack, disrupting offenses with his high energy.

Midway through spring practice Coleman, who was said to have had an NIL deal of more than $2 million, stopped showing up. He missed the spring game, then failed to return to campus for summer workouts.

Coach Josh Heupel said he and the Tennessee staff was supportive of Coleman as he worked through some personal issues. There was also a mention of Coleman dealing with a lingering head injury.

Coleman's departure leaves the Vols high and dry, when it comes to dynamic playmakers on the edge. Veteran Caleb Herring (South Carolina) and former five-star recruit Jordan Ross (LSU) left via the transfer portal while the transition at defensive coordinator from Tim Banks to Knowles was happening.

There were also some younger edge rushers who departed.

That leaves Jordan Norman, a transfer from Tulane, and Tyree Weathersby as the only players back with significant experience.
