How can Tennessee avoid disaster in Columbia on Saturday?

In what is perhaps the most confusing matchup of the Week 8 college football slate, the Tennessee Volunteers will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, for a highly anticipated matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Contrary to popular belief, the 3-3 (1-3 SEC) Gamecocks have the conference’s top rushing offense, collecting more than 230 yards per game so far this season.

Sophomore running back Matt Fuller is off to a red-hot start in his first full season as the starter, averaging 6 yards per attempt, en route to 485 yards and five touchdowns.

He also poses a threat outside of the backfield, having caught 16 passes for 128 additional yards and a touchdown.

Fuller is hardly the only explosive presence in the Gamecock backfield, however, as Jabree Coleman and Isaiah Augustave have combined for 8 yards per carry on 41 attempts.

Unfortunately for Tennessee, the Gamecocks also possess a multitude of weapons outside of the backfield.

Despite playing only six games, LaNorris Sellers, perhaps the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback, has rushed for 411 yards, the second-best mark in the SEC.

Sellers has also thrown for 1,338 yards, to go along with 12 touchdowns, and just four interceptions.

Six-foot-5 senior receiver Nyck Harbor looks like a poor man’s Calvin Johnson when playing to his potential.

Mazeo Bennett Jr. poses a massive threat over the middle of the field, having caught 25 passes for 236 yards.

So you might be asking, how on earth is South Carolina 1-3 in SEC play, despite having one of the most high-powered offenses in the nation?

Meet Shane Beamer, the sixth-year head coach who seems unable to get out of his own way.

Since 2022, the Gamecocks have blown seven double-figure leads, including a 16-0 lead against Mississippi State earlier this season, along with a 17-0 lead against the No. 12 Kentucky Wildcats.

Beamer has struggled to bring the Gamecocks back to relevance since taking over in 2021, despite consistently landing some of the nation’s top high school talent.

Candidly, it is nothing short of a miracle that Beamer still has a job.

So, how does Tennessee avoid disaster against South Carolina?

Though the Volunteers will enter Columbia as 2.5-point underdogs, few people realistically expect them to lose, given the fact that a loss at the hands of South Carolina would completely derail their College Football Playoff (CFP) ambitions.

As the old adage goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The Volunteers must run the ball 30 or more times on Saturday, and assert their dominant presence along the defensive line early, salting away the clock while allowing their Jim Knowles-led defense to feast on South Carolina.

“Jim Knowles is the best in the business,” cornerback Kayin Lee said. “He puts us in the best positions [to win].”

If South Carolina can find a way to score more than 24 points in this game, its chance of victory will skyrocket.

If Knowles’ defensive performance this season has been any indication, however, the Gamecocks will not come close.
