Tennessee football experienced a significant overhaul of its defensive staff over the course of the offseason, heading into 2026.

With the firing of former defensive coordinator Tim Banks and the hiring of Jim Knowles out of Penn State, all eyes once again turn to how the unit will respond.

The Vols have made immediate efforts in the transfer portal to recover from a rough 2025 campaign, which saw the team allow 397.2 yards per game, ranking 14th in the Southeastern Conference.

Yet the development of prospects never stops, and the Vols have already logged three separate high-school commits on the defensive side.

Here’s a look at the early commits in the 2027 cycle:

Kadin Fife, Defensive Line

According to the website On3,  Kaden Fife ranks as a four-star, hailing from Summerville, Georgia.

Fife saw a breakout season in his junior year of 2025; the main highlight on his statline is his 10 tackles for loss in eight games played.

Back in October 2025, Fife spoke postgame about interest in all of his final school, Tennessee among the teams listed. He was asked what stood out about each school.

"The coach staff and culture they have at Tennessee," Fife said.

Fife committed a month later in November to the University of Tennessee.

Additionally, in his junior season, Fife earned six sacks with 31 total tackles on the defensive front.

Jaden Butler, Athlete

Described as a player who can handle both sides of the field, Butler played both offense and defense in 2025 for his junior season after primarily playing on defense his first two seasons.

Butler, ranked as the 26th best player in the state of Tennessee according to 247sports, Butler tallied six interceptions, three tackles for loss, and one forced fumble during his junior season.

"Their style of play, I like that. The tradition is huge up there," said Butler, "When I went down there, walking down during the [Vol] Walk, there were a lot of fans supporting the players. The blackout game [against Oklahoma] was very intense."

Playing the safety position on defense, he amassed 11 interceptions in his three-year high school career and is poised for a big senior season with Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tennessee.

JP Peace, Linebacker

Standing at 6-foot-3 and ranked as the 50th linebacker in the country, JP Peace slots as the third-highest ranked defensive commit in the cycle.

In 2024, with 12 games in his sophomore season, Peace earned 51.5 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 1 interception, and one forced fumble.

Peace has some ties to the University of Tennessee before his commitment, besides playing high school football 30 minutes away from the campus in Maryville. His father, Robert Peace, played linebacker for the school, while his grandfather, Phillip Fulmer, is a former head coach of the school, who also happens to be in the school’s Hall of Fame.

"I mean, it's really going to be, like, an unreal experience knowing that I'm following in my dad's footsteps a little bit in that way," Peace said. "I'm excited to do that."
