Gordon's explosive production and physical running style have transformed Miami’s backfield dynamics, positioning the former Oklahoma State star to command significant carries even after the former Aggies star returns.
The Miami Dolphins may have found a reason to rethink their backfield rotation, and Ollie Gordon II is making a strong case for himself.
With De’Von Achane sidelined by a season-ending knee injury, Gordon has taken advantage of his expanded opportunities and shown that he can be more than just a backup. His recent performances could have a lasting impact on how Miami distributes carries once Achane is healthy again.
Gordon entered the season behind Achane and Jaylen Wright on the depth chart, leaving him with limited opportunities to establish himself. However, Achane’s injury suddenly opened the door for the former Oklahoma State standout, and he has responded with the kind of production that demands attention.
The biggest sign of Gordon’s potential came against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 4, when he rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on just nine carries. His 53-yard run demonstrated the explosiveness he can bring to an offense, while his ability to finish the day with a score showed that he can contribute in the red zone. Gordon followed that performance with another strong outing against the New York Jets on Oct. 25, recording 103 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.
Those performances are particularly important because Gordon offers Miami a different style of running than Achane. While Achane is known for his speed, acceleration, and ability to turn a small opening into a game-changing play, Gordon brings a bigger frame and a more physical approach.
His ability to run between the tackles could give the Dolphins another effective option when they need to establish the ground game or finish drives near the goal line.
When Achane eventually returns, Miami could benefit from using both backs rather than automatically giving Achane nearly every opportunity. Gordon has demonstrated that he can handle a substantial workload, and his recent production gives the coaching staff a legitimate reason to keep him involved. That could mean fewer carries for Achane, particularly on early downs and in short-yardage situations.
Of course, Achane’s established playmaking ability will make him difficult to displace as Miami’s primary running back. Gordon will need to maintain his efficiency and prove that his success can continue against different defensive schemes. Still, his recent performances have changed the conversation surrounding the Dolphins’ backfield.
Gordon may have entered the season as a depth option, but he is quickly becoming a player Miami cannot afford to overlook. If he continues producing at this level, Achane could return to a backfield that looks considerably different than the one he left.
