Transitioning to Kyle Shanahan’s offense, the veteran wideout must overcome recent injury hurdles to fill a vital void in San Francisco’s high-powered attack and sustain his legendary production.
Former Texas A&M star Mike Evans is entering a new chapter of his NFL career, and ESPN believes the veteran wide receiver could have a major impact on the San Francisco 49ers’ 2026 season.
In ESPN’s annual look at the biggest X-factors for all 32 NFL teams, Evans was selected as San Francisco’s player to watch. The move to the 49ers gives the former Aggie an opportunity to play in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, where his unique combination of size, route-running ability, and contested-catch skills could add another dimension to an already talented unit.
Evans spent the first 12 seasons of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining San Francisco this offseason. At 33 years old, however, his health and ability to remain productive will be among the biggest questions surrounding his transition to a new team.
The biggest concern is whether Evans can stay healthy. He dealt with a hamstring injury in 2025 and has already experienced some issues during training camp this summer, including a quad strain and reported groin problems.
Those concerns become even more important because San Francisco lost Ricky Pearsall for the season to a right UCL tear. With Pearsall unavailable, the 49ers could potentially need Evans to handle a larger workload than originally anticipated.
But it is evident that Evans can get the job done even with his advancing age. Through the first 11 seasons of his career, he did not drop under 1,000 yards in a year. And if it wasn't for an injury in 2025, he would have broken the tie between him and Jerry Rice for consecutive seasons eclipsing the century mark in yards.
For San Francisco, Evans does not necessarily need to return to his peak production to make a difference. If he can remain healthy and consistently win his matchups, he gives quarterback Brock Purdy another proven weapon and provides Shanahan with a receiver capable of doing things the rest of the roster cannot.
For Texas A&M fans, Evans' continued success at the highest level of football is another reminder of the impact he made in College Station. Now, his performance could help determine just how high the 49ers can climb in 2026.
