In Carolina's first training camp practice, Scourton's 2026 season came to an end.
The football gods haven't smiled on former Texas A&M star Nick Scourton as the linebacker was set to have a big 2026 for the Carolina Panthers.
With the Panthers beginning training camp, Scourton was looked at as one key piece on the defense who was going to make a huge leap in Year 2 after his 5.0 sacks from 17 games (eight starts) in his rookie season.
But in Carolina's first practice of training camp, the injury bug sunk its fangs into Scourton, who suffered an ACL injury late on the first day.
It is absolutely brutal news for the young linebacker who was primed to have a big 2026 as part of what many think will be a vastly improved Carolina defense.
But now, just as Scourton was getting set to lay a good foundation for the year ahead, injury has struck.
"Brutal news for the Panthers, brutal news for Scourton, who was expected to have a huge Year 2 impact for the Panthers," national reporter Cameron Wolfe said on ESPN. "The thought was that he was going to be a really strong duo with their highly priced pass rusher, Jaelen Phillips.
"He took an awkward step towards the end of practice, and he fell down, and I've seen a lot of practices; I haven't seen many where a player gets carted off, and every single player comes up and hugs them. You could feel the heaviness of the impact and of the injury."
Now Scourton will reportedly undergo surgery on his knee in the coming weeks per NFL.com, and it is just brutal news for the former Aggies star.
Set to be one of the key pieces on defense for coordinator Ejiro Evero, the Panthers' brain trust now has to shuffle the deck to cover the loss of a player the team expected to have for 2026 and to be a key piece as well.
This is always the worry for NFL teams after a month-long break: when those first couple of training camp practices happen, sometimes injuries can occur, and for the Panthers, it is a horrible way to start what they think is the beginning of something fruitful in 2026.
And unfortunately, they will be without their promising defensive stud for the entire season.
