Cleveland’s first-round selection boasts elite separation skills, yet unstable quarterback play and emerging competition for targets threaten to derail his highly anticipated debut season with the Browns.
Former Texas A&M wide receiver KC Concepcion is entering his first NFL season with plenty of expectations on his shoulders after the Cleveland Browns selected him in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
As the regular season approaches, NFL.com recently examined the best- and worst-case scenarios for several of the league's top offensive rookies, with Concepcion included among the wide receivers. The outlook for the former Aggie is particularly intriguing because his rookie season could go in very different directions depending on Cleveland's quarterback play.
The best-case scenario is a promising one.
Concepcion is widely considered as the best separator in this year's rookie class, a trait that could allow him to make an immediate impact in Cleveland's passing attack. If he consistently creates separation against NFL defensive backs, the Browns could quickly turn to him as their primary option through the air.
That opportunity could become even greater if Cleveland finds itself playing from behind regularly. In that situation, Concepcion could see his target total steadily increase throughout the season as the Browns look for reliable options in the passing game.
A strong finish to the season could ultimately establish Concepcion as one of the more productive rookie receivers in the league.
NFL.com's projected stat line reflects that potential, with Concepcion expected to finish his first season with 66 receptions for 779 yards and five touchdowns.
However, there is a clear concern standing between Concepcion and that optimistic outcome.
Quarterback inconsistency could prevent the former Texas A&M standout from getting into a rhythm during his rookie campaign. If Cleveland's quarterbacks struggle to consistently deliver the football, Concepcion's ability to separate from defenders will not matter as much if he is not receiving enough opportunities.
The Browns named Deshaun Watson their starting quarterback recently, who has not passed for more than 1,200 yards since all the way back in 2020. And if he goes down to injury or does not play well, the QB would be Shedeur Sanders, who is quite unproven.
The Browns also have other sizable targets who could command attention. Fellow rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston and tight end Harold Fannin Jr. are the players Cleveland's quarterbacks could favor because of their size. If that happens, Concepcion could see a surprisingly low number of targets despite being a first-round selection.
But if everything breaks right, Concepcion could emerge as a focal point of the Browns' offense.
