De'Von Achane just inked a new extension with the Miami Dolphins and believes that the squad can compete as soon as this season.
Former Aggie running back De'Von Achane is making the most of his time in the NFL, as he is fresh off a four-year contract extension with the Miami Dolphins.
While he is having success personally, it is not the best of times in South Beach. And many do not think things will fare much better for the Phins this upcoming season.
Miami cut ties with head coach Mike McDaniel, sent star wideout Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos and moved up from longtime starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after a stint full of terrifying injuries.
All of these factors and then some have led to thoughts that the Dolphins are into a fresh start and will need a couple of years to return to the success seen just a few seasons ago.
However, Achane is not buying into these rebuilding claims.
During a stop on The Set podcast, Achane remarked to Terron Arnold that he does not see why Miami has to wait to capitalize with the pieces they have.
"I’m not trying to hear 'we rebuilding for two years.' I ain’t trying to do it. Most definitely, I want to win the division, we gotta win the playoff game. I ain’t even going to say we’re going be trying to win the championship, but we just got to get those things first," said Achane.
Safe to say that the Texas A&M product is not content with enjoying the earnings from his new deal regardless of how the Dolphins perform on the field. Instead, Achane is setting goals for the squad that several others view as unattainable.
If Miami is to reach these heights, Achane will need to play a key factor. While he is entering just his third season out of College Station, he has blossomed into a leader with the Dolphins after the aforementioned moves made by the franchise.
Last season, Achane tallied 1,350 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, while also going for nearly 500 yards receiving for another four scores. With a fresh offensive mindset, the former Aggie is a constant that has the potential to make an even bigger impact.
Although veteran Malik Willis has experience under center, Achane's skillset can do wonders in relieving the pressure from the first-year passer during his debut with Dolphins.
Unfortunately for the Dolphins, the AFC East is home to the defending conference champions in the New England Patriots and perennial playoff powerhouse Buffalo Bills, which makes the desire to capture the division crown easier said than done.
It remains to be seen if Miami can live up to these lofty expectation set forth by Achane. But if the Dolphins do, the former Aggie is sure to be at the core of the reasons why.
