The Hall of Fame receiver questions the veteran’s route running and speed, claiming he could still replicate the 49ers star's production despite being out of the league.

Mike Evans has continued to produce at a high level during his first season with the San Francisco 49ers, but former NFL star and Texas A&M legend Terrell Owens is not impressed with everything he has seen from the veteran wide receiver.

Owens recently criticized Evans’ route running and suggested that the former Aggies standout has benefited from his quarterback’s ability to put him in favorable situations. Speaking on the “Get TO The Point Podcast,” Owens questioned whether Evans’ plays have been as impressive as his statistics might suggest.

"We were watching the game. Mike was playing, Mike Evans, and I was like, 'Look at his routes.' I'm like, 'I can do that. It’s not like he’s blazing speed,'" Owens said.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer continued by explaining that Evans understands where to go on the field but suggested that the quarterback deserves some credit for the receiver’s success.

"[Evans] just knows how to run routes, knows where to go, and then the quarterback can save you," Owens said. "Like, he was just catching some really average plays."

When podcast co-host Chris Spencer asked whether Owens could still make the same plays Evans has been making, the 52-year-old former receiver did not hesitate.

"Bro, absolutely," Owens responded.

That confidence comes despite Owens not having played in an NFL game since the 2010 season. During his career, he recorded 15,934 receiving yards and 153 touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the most productive receivers in league history.

Meanwhile, Evans has continued building an impressive resume of his own. Through six games in the 2026 season, he has recorded 27 receptions for 420 yards and three touchdowns. He also holds the NFL record for beginning a career with 11 consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons, a milestone that even legendary 49ers receiver Jerry Rice did not accomplish.

Evans joined San Francisco after spending the first 12 seasons of his professional career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His arrival has given quarterback Brock Purdy another proven target, although injuries have complicated his start with the team.

Evans aggravated an Achilles injury during San Francisco’s Week 6 victory over the Washington Commanders and was ruled out for the following game against Atlanta.

Despite Owens’ criticism, Evans’ production speaks for itself. The former Texas A&M star has consistently delivered throughout his NFL career, and his latest chapter in San Francisco offers another opportunity to strengthen his legacy.
