Texas A&M baseball flashes pitching talent and offensive potential during fall exhibitions, but Michael Earley's rebuilt Aggies face major questions entering 2027.
Texas A&M baseball wrapped up its fall exhibition schedule with an encouraging look at its rebuilt roster, but Michael Earley still has considerable work ahead before the Aggies return to Southeastern Conference competition.
The Aggies split two extended scrimmages at Blue Bell Park, falling 9-5 to Rice over 14 innings before rebounding with a 13-10 victory against McNeese in a 12-inning contest.
The results won't affect Texas A&M's 2027 record, but they revealed plenty about a team featuring 29 newcomers and only 15 returning letterwinners.
"Sixty-six percent of our team is new," Earley said, emphasizing the challenge of preparing an inexperienced roster for the expectations surrounding Aggies baseball.
Perhaps the most encouraging development came from the pitching staff.
Under new pitching coach Barry Enright, Texas A&M demonstrated considerable strikeout potential, particularly against McNeese.
Starter Gavin Lyons struck out five batters across two scoreless innings, while the Aggies' pitching staff combined for 22 strikeouts.
Freshman Trent Vilade struck out the side in the sixth inning, and Logan Prisco delivered two scoreless frames.
Clayton Freshcorn was equally encouraging against Rice, recording four strikeouts while allowing one run in two innings.
But the pitching performances weren't flawless.
Texas A&M issued eight walks against McNeese, highlighting the command issues Enright must address before SEC opponents begin exploiting free baserunners.
Offensively, the Aggies offered several reasons for optimism.
Returning standout Nico Partida reached base in all six plate appearances against McNeese, finishing 3-for-3 with three walks.
Zane Becker added three hits, while freshman Cole Travers delivered one of the fall's biggest moments with a two-run homer off the left-field scoreboard in the 10th inning.
The Aggies also stole seven bases against McNeese, potentially signaling a more aggressive offensive approach.
Clemson transfer Nate Savoie contributed an RBI double against Rice, while returning hitter Jorian Wilson also drove in a run with a double.
Across both exhibitions, Texas A&M produced 24 hits, drew 22 walks and scored 18 runs.
However, missed opportunities remained a concern.
The Aggies stranded 19 runners against McNeese and committed three defensive errors, allowing the Cowboys to extend innings and manufacture additional scoring chances.
That's exactly the kind of inconsistency Earley can't afford when conference play begins.
Texas A&M has assembled an intriguing roster with promising young hitters, experienced transfers and several pitchers capable of missing bats.
But potential alone won't carry the Aggies through another demanding SEC schedule.
Earley needs sharper defense, better pitching command and more timely hitting if Texas A&M expects to return to national prominence.
The Aggies open the 2027 season Feb. 19 against Milwaukee at Blue Bell Park.
