Texas A&M is chasing five-star edge Darieon Prescott as Mike Elko looks to extend the Aggies’ recruiting surge into a loaded 2028 class with national stakes.
Texas A&M football recruiting isn’t slowing down just because Mike Elko has nearly finished assembling the nation’s No. 1-ranked 2027 class.
The Aggies are already swinging at another five-star prize, and this time the target is towering 2028 edge rusher Darieon Prescott.
Prescott is scheduled to announce his commitment on Monday, July 27, with Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Oregon making up his final three.
Notre Dame currently has the momentum after receiving a Rivals prediction, but the Aggies are still standing at the table after Prescott’s recent unofficial visit to College Station.
And with more than a year remaining before the 2028 class reaches the finish line, nobody should mistake an early pledge for a locked door.
Prescott is exactly the type of prospect programs fight over. At 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds, he already owns the frame, reach and athletic burst that defensive coaches can build around.
His ability to bend off the edge while covering ground with long strides gives him the kind of raw profile that screams future Sunday player.
Rivals currently ranks Prescott as the No. 24 overall prospect in the 2028 cycle, the No. 5 edge defender nationally and the No. 2 player in Illinois.
Landing him would give Elko another major national recruiting win while adding a cornerstone defender to an Aggies class that’s only beginning to take shape.
Texas A&M is also trending for four-star quarterback Donald Tabron, who has received multiple predictions to become the program’s second commitment for 2028.
That early momentum matters. Elko and his staff have turned Texas A&M into a factor for elite prospects across the country, leaning on relationships, development, program culture and an NIL operation that can compete with anybody.
The Aggies also aren’t finished with 2027. Five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson remains committed to South Carolina, but his declaration that the process is “long from over” keeps the door cracked for a late push.
A difficult 2026 season for the Gamecocks could make that recruitment especially interesting.
For now, though, Prescott owns the spotlight.
Notre Dame may be the current favorite, and Oregon remains dangerous, but Texas A&M has earned its place in the fight. If Elko lands another five-star defender this early, the Aggies’ recruiting machine won’t just be rolling.
It’ll be coming for No. 1 again.
