Texas A&M baseball needs pitching help, and LSU transfer Marcos Paz could be a high-upside portal target as Barry Enright reshapes the Aggies staff.
Texas A&M baseball knows exactly what has to change before 2027 ... the Aggies need arms.
After a 2026 season where Texas A&M’s pitching staff allowed an SEC-worst 90 home runs and finished with a 5.24 team ERA, Michael Earley didn’t just tweak the room, he attacked the problem.
Now, LSU transfer Marcos Paz has become one of the more intriguing names connected to the Aggies in the transfer portal.
Paz isn’t a finished product, but that’s what makes this chase interesting.
The right-hander went 1-4 in his lone season at LSU, yet the raw material is obvious. He struck out 40 batters in 29.1 innings and allowed only five home runs, flashing the type of stuff that can be molded into something much bigger with the right development plan.
That’s where Texas A&M’s revamped staff comes in.
Barry Enright’s arrival in College Station gives the Aggies instant credibility with pitchers who have professional ambitions.
His MLB background matters, especially for portal arms looking for more than innings.
They’re looking for a clear path to improvement, draft stock and long-term upside.
Paz checks plenty of those boxes.
The Carrollton, Texas, native was a major prospect coming out of Hebron High School, ranked No. 3 among Texas high school right-handed pitchers and No. 22 nationally by Perfect Game.
He was also viewed as one of the top freshmen in the country before his LSU debut, earning top-100 freshman recognition from both Perfect Game and Prep Baseball Report.
There’s also a little familiarity here. Paz faced Texas A&M on April 18 and punched out three Aggies over two innings.
Even in a game LSU lost 7-2, he showed the swing-and-miss ability that makes SEC programs pay attention.
Texas, Georgia and Texas A&M are reportedly among the programs in the mix, so this won’t be an easy recruiting win. But the Aggies have a stronger pitch than they did a few months ago.
Nolan Cain’s return is a massive piece of that. Cain helped Texas A&M reach two College World Series during his previous run from 2022-24, including the program’s first appearance in the CWS Finals.
Pairing Cain’s recruiting power with Enright’s pitching credibility gives Earley a serious portal weapon.
Texas A&M’s lineup gave the Aggies a chance in 2026. If Paz becomes part of the pitching rebuild, the 2027 version could be much more dangerous.
