Texas A&M football enters 2026 with Holmon Wiggins calling plays for Marcel Reed and an offense that could decide the Aggies’ playoff future.

Texas A&M football heads into the 2026 season with one of the SEC’s most intriguing coaching changes, and all eyes are on new offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins.

After Collin Klein left to become Kansas State’s head coach, Mike Elko chose continuity over splash, promoting Wiggins from within and betting that familiarity can keep the Aggies’ momentum rolling.

That decision has sparked plenty of debate among Texas A&M fans.

Wiggins is widely respected as a premier wide receivers coach and developer of NFL talent, but this is a much bigger spotlight.

He’s now tasked with directing an Aggies offense led by quarterback Marcel Reed, whose growth could determine whether Texas A&M returns to the College Football Playoff in 2026.

The timing makes the move even more important. Texas A&M also lost defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, leaving Elko to reshape key parts of his staff entering Year 3 in College Station.

Rather than overhaul everything, Elko made several internal promotions and kept a trusted voice in the building. That approach suggests he values continuity, chemistry, and player development as much as outside buzz.

Wiggins does bring a strong background. He helped develop DeVonta Smith into a Heisman Trophy winner at Alabama and built a reputation as one of college football’s best receiver coaches.

That background matters for an Aggies passing game expected to take a step forward with Reed at the controls and more tempo in the system.

What remains less certain is how Texas A&M will look on the ground. Offensive line coach Adam Cushing, who also handles run-game coordination, could have a major influence there as the Aggies search for balance.

Athlon Sports recently ranked Wiggins among the SEC’s most impactful coordinator hires for 2026, a sign that the league is watching closely. If Reed takes the next step and the offense clicks, Texas A&M may prove this controversial promotion was exactly the right call.
