Vanessa Borovilos and Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio enter the season among the ANNIKA Award contenders after powering Texas A&M’s rise.
Texas A&M women’s golf will open the 2026-27 season with two of the nation’s most dangerous players already attracting major attention.
Vanessa Borovilos and Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio have both landed on the ANNIKA Award Preseason Watch List, giving the Aggies a pair of legitimate candidates for college golf’s top individual prize.
Neither selection feels remotely ceremonial.
Borovilos is coming off a season that rewrote part of the Texas A&M record book. The Canadian junior averaged 71.06 strokes per round, the second-lowest mark in program history, while collecting two individual victories.
She also earned 2026 WGCA First Team All-America recognition and climbed to No. 19 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
More importantly, Borovilos became the first Aggie ever chosen as an ANNIKA Award finalist. That put her among the 10 leading players in Division I women’s golf and placed a sizable target on her back entering the new campaign.
Fernández García-Poggio brings a different kind of menace. The two-time All-American from Spain is ranked No. 30 in the WAGR and has repeatedly shown that pressure doesn’t bother her.
She owns a 7-2-1 collegiate match-play record, highlighted by a ruthless 5-0 performance at the SEC Championship.
This is her third appearance on the preseason ANNIKA Award watch list. For Borovilos, it’s the second consecutive year receiving the distinction.
Together, they give Texas A&M a one-two punch capable of changing tournaments before the final round even begins.
The ANNIKA Award, named for golf legend Annika Sorenstam, recognizes the top female Division I collegiate golfer each season. Players, coaches and college golf media members determine the winner, making the award one of the sport’s most meaningful measures of peer recognition.
Individual hardware can wait, though. Texas A&M has immediate team business to handle.
The Aggies begin their season Sept. 7-9 at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in Grand Haven, Michigan.
They won the event last season and will arrive looking to defend that championship rather than ease quietly into the schedule.
With Borovilos chasing another historically efficient season and Fernández García-Poggio bringing her match-play edge, Texas A&M won’t be sneaking up on anyone.
The ANNIKA Award buzz only confirms what the rest of college golf already knows: the Aggies are loaded, and their two headliners are coming for more.
