Texas A&M added five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, pushing the Aggies to No. 1 in the 2027 recruiting rankings.
Texas A&M football keeps stacking major 2027 recruiting wins, and five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews may be the biggest one yet.
Matthews committed to the Aggies on Friday, choosing Texas A&M over Miami, LSU and Georgia. The decision is a massive win for Mike Elko’s program, especially because Matthews plays at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida, only about 30 minutes from Miami’s campus.

For much of his recruitment, Miami looked like the team to beat. Instead, Texas A&M made the late push that mattered and landed one of the most coveted players in the country.
Matthews is ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2027 class and gives the Aggies another elite building block in what is now the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Team Recruiting Ranking.
He’s also the sixth Texas A&M pledge in the cycle ranked among the top three at his position.
At 6-6 and 300 pounds, Matthews has the size coaches want in a future left tackle.
What makes him different is how easily he moves. His flexibility, balance and bend are rare for a player that big, and those traits are exactly why so many national powers pushed hard for him.
Matthews is still relatively new to football, which makes his ceiling even more intriguing. He spent much of his athletic life on the basketball court and didn’t start playing football until his freshman year at St. Thomas Aquinas.
He began on defense, flashed quickly, and eventually transitioned into an offensive tackle prospect with first-round upside.
That athletic background shows in his footwork. Matthews has the quickness to handle speed rushers, the frame to develop more power and the natural movement skills to become a high-end blindside protector.
The comparison some evaluators have made is Tristan Wirfs, the former Iowa standout who became one of the NFL’s best tackles.
That doesn’t mean Matthews is already that player, but the physical profile and athletic tools are why scouts are so excited.
There will be development ahead, especially because Matthews is still learning the position. But Texas A&M isn’t just getting a big body. The Aggies are getting a premium tackle prospect with elite traits, rare upside and the potential to become a future NFL first-round pick.
