Texas A&M added Wichita State transfer Johnny Nuanez, giving new pitching coach Barry Enright a proven starter after a breakout season.
Texas A&M baseball needed pitching help, and the Aggies just landed a strong first answer.
Wichita State transfer Johnny Nuanez committed to Texas A&M on Friday, giving new pitching coach Barry Enright a proven right-handed starter to plug into the Aggies’ offseason rebuild.
Nuanez becomes the first pitcher Texas A&M has added through the transfer market and the Aggies’ third transfer pickup overall.
For a staff looking to reset its identity, this is a clean step forward.
Nuanez is coming off the best season of his college career. The former Wichita State starter went 6-2 with a 2.56 ERA across 56.1 innings, making 12 starts in 13 appearances for the Shockers.
He held opposing hitters to a .210 batting average, allowed only three home runs, walked 20 and struck out 58.
That’s the kind of profile Texas A&M badly needed: experience, strike-throwing ability and enough swing-and-miss to matter in the SEC.
The Aggies hired Enright to help reshape the pitching staff, and Nuanez gives him an immediate project with real upside. He isn’t just a one-year flash, either. His career has followed a steady climb.
Nuanez began at Grossmont College, where he made 21 starts in 23 appearances over two seasons. His overall junior college numbers were uneven — an 8-6 record and 6.14 ERA over 114.1 innings, but the growth showed quickly.
As a sophomore, he improved to 6-2 with a 4.90 ERA, a 1.43 WHIP, 63 strikeouts and only 12 walks in 64 1/3 innings.
Then came the breakout at Wichita State.
Now, Nuanez gets one final college season in College Station and a chance to prove his rise can survive the jump in competition. The SEC won’t be forgiving, but Texas A&M didn’t need a lottery ticket.
The Aggies needed a pitcher trending the right way. Nuanez checks that box.
