Hargett wasn’t just another name from Texas A&M’s past. He was one of the program’s true quarterback trailblazers, a player who helped reshape what the position could look like in Aggieland during the late 1960s.
His career numbers still jump off the page.
From 1966-68, Hargett threw for 5,379 yards, produced 5,411 yards of total offense and accounted for 40 touchdowns.
By the time he finished his college career, he owned several major Texas A&M records.
Decades later, he still reportedly holds 20 school marks, a ridiculous reminder of just how far ahead of his time he was.
The wild part? Hargett didn’t even open his career as the unquestioned starter.
He finally got his first start as a sophomore and immediately made noise, setting a Texas A&M single-game record with 21 completions against Tulane.
From there, the job was his. Hargett started the final 30 games of his Aggies career and became the kind of steady, fearless leader every program spends years trying to find.
His defining season came in 1967, when Texas A&M captured the Southwest Conference championship.
But the moment that still lives loudest came in the Cotton Bowl, where the Aggies knocked off Alabama and legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant.
For Texas A&M fans, that win wasn’t just another bowl result. It was a program-shaping statement. And Hargett was right in the middle of it.
After his time in College Station, Hargett moved on to the NFL.
The New Orleans Saints selected him in the 1969 NFL Draft, and he spent four seasons with the franchise before later playing for the Houston Oilers.
Now, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame will formally recognize what Aggies fans have known for years ... Hargett belongs in that room.
The induction ceremony is scheduled for August 4 at 11:30 a.m. CT at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco.
For a quarterback who helped write some of Texas A&M’s most important football chapters, it’s a well-earned salute.
