Freshman right-hander Luke Billings is entering the transfer portal as Texas A&M baseball faces a major pitching rebuild.
Texas A&M baseball already had a pitching problem, and now the transfer portal is making it louder.
Freshman right-hander Luke Billings is leaving the Aggies after one season, becoming the second pitcher from a thin Texas A&M staff to bolt in the portal this offseason.
For a program that just moved on from pitching coach Jason Kelly after another rough year on the mound, the timing couldn’t be much worse.
The Aggies need arms. They need development. And right now, they don’t even have the pitching coach who will be asked to lead the rebuild.
Billings didn’t get much of a runway in College Station. He appeared in only three games and finished with a 40.50 ERA, three strikeouts and three walks over 1.1 innings.
Those numbers are ugly, but they’re also built on a tiny sample size.
His debut against Houston showed why there’s still intrigue. Billings struck out three and walked one in a scoreless outing, flashing the kind of arm talent that could make him an interesting pickup elsewhere.
The SEC was a different story. He allowed six runs combined against Florida and Auburn while giving up just two hits, with control issues doing most of the damage.
That’s the frustrating part for Texas A&M. Billings wasn’t necessarily getting crushed. He just couldn’t consistently command the baseball.
His exit follows Michael Bollinger, who entered the transfer portal earlier this spring.
Losing two pitchers before a new pitching coach is even hired only adds pressure to Michael Earley’s offseason.
Texas A&M’s pitching staff finished the season with a 5.24 ERA and allowed 90 home runs, numbers that made change unavoidable.
But change only works if the Aggies replace what’s leaving and upgrade what remains.
The portal has to be a priority. Rotation help, bullpen depth and high-upside developmental arms all need to be on the shopping list.
Billings’ departure may not be the biggest roster blow by itself.
But for Texas A&M, it’s another reminder that the mound rebuild can’t wait.
