Texas A&M’s reported $10 million NIL push has raised the heat on Mike Elko, who now must prove the Aggies’ CFP rise wasn’t a one-year spike.
Texas A&M football has never been shy about spending big, but the reported NIL price tag attached to Mike Elko’s 2027 recruiting class just dumped gasoline on the conversation in College Station.
According to On3’s reporting, one SEC general manager estimated Texas A&M has spent “easily $10 million” on the 2027 cycle, well above the typical $5 million to $7 million range being discussed around top programs.
That number hits differently when the Aggies are sitting on the No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class and already have blue-chip headliners like five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, who reportedly could earn $1 million during his Texas A&M career.
So yes, the Aggies are recruiting like a monster. Now comes the uncomfortable part ... proving this isn’t just another expensive mirage.
That’s the shadow still hanging over the program after the Jimbo Fisher era.
Fisher stacked stars, made national headlines and signed the historic 2022 class, but Texas A&M never became the machine it was supposed to become.
The Aggies never won more than nine games under Fisher, and the roster often felt more like a collection of rankings than a team built around identity, leadership and fit.
That’s where Elko is supposed to be different.
When Texas A&M hired Elko in November 2023, it wasn’t the loudest possible move. It was the grown-up move. Elko had already succeeded in College Station as defensive coordinator, then proved at Duke that he could build structure without unlimited resources.
After a rough ending to his first season in 2024, the Aggies exploded in 2025 with an 11-0 start and reached the College Football Playoff for the first time.
But the finish still stung. Back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami, including a CFP first-round exit, gave critics all the ammunition they needed.
Then came Elko’s six-year, $69 million extension, and suddenly the standard changed overnight.
Now, 2026 becomes the prove-it year.
Quarterback Marcel Reed is back for his second full season as the starter after throwing for 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 2025.
Texas A&M also returns 65 percent of last year’s roster and has added 17 transfers, giving Elko enough talent to make another postseason push.
The schedule won’t be soft. The expectations won’t be patient. And after a reported $10 million NIL flex, nobody wants to hear about rebuilding.
Elko has changed the temperature around Texas A&M. Now he has to prove the Aggies are built to stay hot.
