Texas A&M football has the pieces to crash the College Football Playoff again.
The real question is whether Marcel Reed is ready to turn from dangerous playmaker into dependable SEC assassin.
That’s the storyline hanging over Mike Elko’s third season in College Station. Reed showed real growth in 2025, throwing for a career-best 3,169 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in his first full year as Texas A&M’s starting quarterback.
He also built instant chemistry with transfer weapons KC Concepcion and Mario Craver, who combined for nearly 1,900 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns.
That’s big-time production. But the next step isn’t about highlight throws. It’s about control.
The Aggies were rolling at 11-0 last season before the offense hit a wall at the worst possible time. Texas slowed them down on the road, then Miami turned Texas A&M’s first College Football Playoff appearance at Kyle Field into a 10-3 gut punch.
Reed’s two interceptions in that game still linger because championship-level quarterbacks can’t blink in those moments.
Before SEC play gets nasty, Texas A&M hosts Arizona State in Week 2, and that game has trap written all over it.
It’s an 11 a.m. CT kickoff at Kyle Field, which means brutal heat, weird energy and a Sun Devils team that’s already tasted the playoff under Kenny Dillingham.
Arizona State will look different after losing quarterback Sam Leavitt to LSU, with Kentucky transfer Cutter Boley expected to take over, but this isn’t some soft early-season tune-up.
Then the real grind begins.
Texas A&M hosts Kentucky before back-to-back road games at LSU and Missouri.
Arkansas comes to College Station after that, followed by a brutal road swing at Alabama and South Carolina. Tuscaloosa will get the headlines, but Columbia might be the nastier ambush.

But if Texas A&M wants more than a nice season, Reed has to be sharper, steadier and colder when the game gets tight.
