Texas A&M edge commit Kaden McCarty is surging after a 12-sack season, giving Mike Elko another dangerous weapon in the Aggies’ loaded 2027 class.
Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class is loaded with five-star firepower, but four-star edge rusher Kaden McCarty might become the commitment opposing quarterbacks learn to fear most.
McCarty has turned himself into one of the fastest-rising defenders in the country after terrorizing offenses throughout his junior season.
He finished the year with 51 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and two forced fumbles, numbers that scream disruption rather than development project.
He isn’t simply collecting sacks against overwhelmed blockers, either. McCarty’s movement, acceleration and ability to bend around the edge give him the kind of pass-rush foundation that should translate quickly at the college level.
That makes him an ideal fit for Texas A&M coach Mike Elko.
Elko’s defensive system has already shown what it can do for a talented edge defender. Cashius Howell arrived in College Station from Bowling Green before the 2024 season and eventually exploded for an SEC-leading 11.5 sacks.
His development helped him become a second-round selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2026 NFL Draft.
McCarty could be the next defender to ride that pipeline from overlooked disruptor to NFL prospect.
His stock received another boost when he was selected to the 2026 Preseason DCTX Whataburger Super Team.
Fellow Texas A&M commitments JayQuan Snell, Kennedy Brown and Kaeden Scott also earned recognition, offering another reminder that the Aggies aren’t merely recruiting stars—they’re stacking some of the best high school talent in Texas.
The class is currently headlined by six five-star commitments, including elite offensive tackle Mark Matthews.
Ranked as the nation’s No. 2 overall prospect, Matthews already possesses the pass-protection ability and physical traits associated with future first-round draft picks.
McCarty doesn’t carry the same recruiting ranking as Matthews, but his production is becoming impossible to ignore.
For Elko, that matters.
Texas A&M’s long-term plan isn’t based on chasing one magical recruiting class.
The Aggies are attempting to combine elite high school talent, carefully selected transfer additions and stronger roster retention to build a sustainable College Football Playoff contender.
The program’s record 10 selections in the 2026 NFL Draft only strengthens Elko’s pitch. Players are arriving in College Station, developing and reaching the league.
Now McCarty has a chance to become another example.
He still has his senior high school season ahead of him, but the tools and production are already there.
If his rise continues, Texas A&M’s four-star edge commitment may not remain a four-star prospect for much longer.
And once McCarty reaches College Station, quarterbacks across the SEC may have an even bigger problem.
