Aiden Sims fired a complete-game shutout at Vanderbilt, giving Texas A&M a huge SEC series win and fresh momentum in its postseason push.
Texas A&M baseball got exactly what it needed in Nashville, and Aiden Sims made sure the Aggies left with a statement series win.
The Aggies took two of three from Vanderbilt to move to 7-5 in SEC play, a result that gives Texas A&M a stronger postseason profile and more momentum heading into the middle of conference season.
While the lineup has powered much of A&M’s success, Sims delivered the kind of pitching performance that can change the outlook of an entire weekend.
In the second game of Friday’s doubleheader, the sophomore right-hander turned in his best outing of the season.
Aiden Sims threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout to clinch the series, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Vanderbilt hitters managed only a .125 batting average against him, and the victory marked his third straight SEC win.
That kind of start matters for a Texas A&M pitching staff that’s still working to become more reliable. The Aggies have shown they can score with just about anyone, but sustained success in SEC baseball usually comes down to whether a team can get enough quality innings on the mound.
Sims gave them more than quality. He gave them control of the series and a reminder of what this staff can look like when a weekend starter is locked in.
His outing also eased the pressure on an offense that has often had to carry the burden. When a starter is commanding the zone and limiting damage, the entire team can settle in and play with more confidence.
That’s why Sims’ performance could end up being one of the most important developments of the weekend for Texas A&M.
The Aggies now head to Texas State for a Tuesday road matchup at Bobcat Park with momentum, a key SEC series victory, and a starting pitcher who may be emerging at exactly the right time.
