After walking away from the Miami Dolphins days after signing, Le'Veon Moss faces a wave of online vitriol from fans ignoring a grueling history of collegiate injuries.
The insensitivity and the ignorance is staggering.
In an undeniably stunning move, former Texas A&M Aggies running back Le'Veon Moss announced this week that he is retiring from football just four days after inking an undrafted free-agent deal with the Miami Dolphins.
According to initial reports, Moss was given around $250,000 from the Dolphins to take part in their rookie minicamp.
The decision could impact the Miami roster as they are now without a potential depth piece to replenish a rushing attack headed by a freshly extended De'Von Achane - another Aggies ex.
While Moss seemed ready to roll in the NFL, there were signs that his football career may be coming to an end sooner than expected. ... signs that too many fans are ignoring as they offer reactions that we find - yes, insensitive and ignorant.
Heading into NFL Draft, there were concerns over Moss' injury history while in college, which most likely played a role in the running back going undrafted. These injury woes reared their head in his last two seasons with Texas A&M, as he tore his ACL and MCL in 2024 and then tweaked his ankle on two separate occasions last seasons during the Aggies' run to the College Football Playoff.
When not battling injuries, Moss showcased power and speed out of the backfield that rivaled almost anyone in the SEC. He tallied just shy of 1,800 yards and 22 touchdowns during his four-year career, in which he never played more than nine games in a season.
Despite these questions from other teams around the league, Miami appeared ready to give Moss the chance to prove that he could overcome adversity once again.
For the Dolphins to lose out on Moss before he stepped foot on the field is a tough pill to swallow.
Fans of the Dolphins and those commenting on the bizarre move have taken to social media to voice their disapproval with Moss' decision. Some claim that Moss swindled Miami out of the guaranteed money with no desire to ever suit up for the team. Others were confused how he could retire if he never truly started his career on the field.
Some samples of fans' comments ...
Wrote one: “He just came to pick up his check 😂.”
Another fan commented, “Stop calling this (expletive) retiring, it’s a stain on the real men who give their all to the sport. This is just a dude quitting after realizing he doesn’t have the juice to compete. Didn’t even try, lol.”
And from another: “Wait a minute, call me stupid, but how can you retire before your professional career even starts? Why even sign with the team if you know you’re going to retire?”
Regardless of what led to his decision, Moss has said goodbye to his football career after an up-and-down stint during his time College Station. Although it does not make much sense to those on the outside, Moss knows better than anyone else what he can endure moving forward.
And anyone who thinks otherwise is guilty of insensitivity and ignorance.
