Texas A&M is making an early move for elite 2028 safety Casey Barner, who plans to experience Kyle Field during a game-day visit this fall.
Texas A&M football recruiting is already reaching deep into the 2028 class, and Mike Elko has quickly identified one of the biggest prizes in the country.
Five-star defensive back Casey Barner, currently ranked by Rivals as the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2028 cycle, plans to return to College Station for a game-day visit this fall.
Four-star cornerback Jordan Hicks is also expected to visit, giving the Aggies early momentum with two priority defensive backs before either begins his junior season.
That’s not casual interest. That’s Texas A&M getting aggressive years ahead of signing day.
Barner has made it clear that the Aggies’ staff is treating him like a centerpiece rather than another name buried on a recruiting board.
Elko’s vision for the program has connected with the elite safety, while safeties coach Ishmael Aristide has helped build a relationship that continues to gain traction.
Barner told AggieYell that he wants to experience the atmosphere inside Kyle Field during one of Texas A&M’s seven home games this season.
A successful game-day visit could become a major moment in a recruitment that will eventually draw attention from nearly every national powerhouse.
The timing matters.
Texas A&M remains focused on protecting its No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, but the Aggies aren’t waiting for that cycle to close before attacking 2028.
Elko and his staff have already proven they can recruit outside traditional Texas pipelines.
The Aggies have found success in Georgia, added multiple commitments from Florida and shown they’re comfortable competing in an NIL-heavy landscape where geography matters less than ever.
Elko’s defensive background should also give Texas A&M a legitimate selling point with Barner and Hicks.
His reputation for developing defensive backs isn’t built on marketing slogans.
He understands the position, knows what NFL-caliber players should look like and can explain exactly how talented safeties and cornerbacks fit inside his system.
Barner is spending the offseason working to become faster, stronger and more instinctive. He’s concentrating on film study, awareness and adding muscle before an important junior campaign.
Texas A&M’s pursuit is still in its early stages, but the Aggies have already accomplished something important: They’ve made the nation’s top 2028 safety feel wanted.
In modern recruiting, that’s where serious battles begin.
