Panthers rookie Will Lee III delivered a clutch interception in training camp, giving the former Texas A&M cornerback an early chance to earn real snaps.
Will Lee III didn’t need long to announce himself at Carolina Panthers training camp.
The former Texas A&M cornerback delivered the biggest defensive play of practice, intercepting Bryce Young during a late situational period and providing Carolina with a promising response to an otherwise painful start to camp for its former Aggies.
Edge rusher Nic Scourton reportedly tore his ACL during the Panthers’ opening practice and is expected to miss the entire 2026 NFL season.
Scourton recorded five sacks as a rookie, making his loss a significant hit for a Carolina defense hoping to help push the franchise back into playoff contention.
Lee’s emergence won’t erase that setback, but it gives Panthers fans - and Texas A&M fans - something positive to follow.
Selected by Carolina in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Lee entered camp with an opportunity to earn immediate playing time behind Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson.
Minor injuries to both veterans have created additional practice snaps, and Lee is already showing he won’t waste them.
His interception was especially impressive because it came after he’d surrendered a deep completion earlier in practice.
Instead of allowing the mistake to linger, Lee attacked the next opportunity and made a game-changing play against Carolina’s first-team offense.
Panthers reporter Kassidy Hill described the sequence:
“Lee was beaten on a deep ball earlier in the day. But as Young wound up to send it deep for Legette, coaches saw a rookie shake any insecurities and do what he knows best ... go after the ball. He bided his time before cutting across the ball's flight path for the nab. He turned, celebrated with a raucous defense, then punted the ball back across the field.
“Got beat on a deep one. What I love is he bounced back,” bragged Canales. “Made the play of the day at the end with the number one offense driving down the field, the timeout left somewhere around the 25-30 yard line, knocking on the door when we needed a touchdown and Will comes up with a big play on a critical fourth down.”
That kind of response is exactly what Carolina needs from a rookie cornerback.
Lee spent two seasons as Texas A&M’s top cover option, routinely drawing difficult assignments in the SEC.
His aggressive style occasionally created risk, but his confidence, length and ability to find the football made him one of the Aggies’ most valuable defensive backs.
Now he’s fighting for more than a roster spot.
With Horn and Jackson temporarily limited, Lee has a chance to force his way into Carolina’s defensive rotation before the Panthers open the season against Chicago on Sept. 13.
Former Texas A&M safety Demani Richardson followed a similar path, going undrafted before earning a reserve role with the Panthers.
Lee arrived with a stronger draft pedigree and an opening to move even faster.
One interception doesn’t guarantee anything, but bouncing back from a bad rep and immediately delivering the play of the day is one heck of a way to make coaches remember your name.
