Texas A&M’s 2027 recruiting class centerpiece isn’t backing off his pledge, but that doesn’t mean other programs are backing off from him.
Four-star quarterback Jayce Johnson, the prized signal-caller out of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, remains committed to Mike Elko and the Aggies.
Johnson has been locked in with Texas A&M since August 3, yet Florida State continues to apply steady pressure as his senior season approaches.
According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Johnson is the No. 3 quarterback in the nation for the 2027 cycle, the No. 4 overall player in Georgia, and the No. 53 overall prospect nationally.
With 30 scholarship offers on the table, he’s one of the most coveted quarterbacks in the country, and quarterbacks of that caliber rarely go unchallenged.
Johnson recently traveled to South Florida for the Rivals Camp and made it known that while he’s committed to Texas A&M, he understands how fluid recruiting can be. That openness is all Florida State needs to keep making its pitch.
The Seminoles’ proximity to Valdosta is no small factor. Tallahassee is just down the road compared to College Station, and that “close to home” pull can get stronger as signing day inches closer.
Florida State head coach Mike Norvell has reportedly made Johnson a priority, and with offensive changes happening in both programs, there’s intrigue on both sides.
Texas A&M will enter a new era offensively under coordinator Holmon Wiggins, who steps in after Collin Klein’s departure.
While Elko’s defensive pedigree is unquestioned, the Aggies’ ability to develop quarterbacks under Wiggins will be under a microscope.
Meanwhile, Florida State has long sold quarterback development and NFL upside. Historically, the Seminoles have produced first-round talent at the position, and that pitch still carries weight in the Southeast.
That said, Texas A&M remains in a strong position. The Aggies’ NIL resources are among the best in the nation, and stability under Elko gives Johnson something to believe in.
If Marcel Reed thrives in the new system this fall, it only strengthens the argument that College Station is the right long-term destination.
Florida State is absolutely a program to monitor in this recruitment.
But for now, the Aggies still control the board. The key? Keep developing quarterbacks, keep building momentum ... and keep Jayce Johnson feeling like QB1 of the future in Aggieland.
