Texas loses key defensive leader other than injury

It was reported on Tuesday that Michael Taaffe underwent thumb surgery earlier this week and will miss the foreseeable future, but isn't expected to be out for the season. This is a huge blow to the defense, especially given he's a leader on this team. 

Who needs to step up in his absence? Can this team still play championship-level defense without him?
