Hero Kanu’s impact at Texas is extending well beyond the defensive line.
The Longhorns veteran was named a semifinalist for the 2026 William V. Campbell Trophy, one of college football’s premier scholar-athlete honors.
The award recognizes players for a combination of academic achievement, football performance and leadership. Kanu is one of a record 206 semifinalists nationwide.
Kanu has become an important piece of the No. 1 Longhorns’ defense during their 3-0 start. Through three games, he has recorded six tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. His tackles for loss and quarterback hurries both rank second on the team.
But the Campbell Trophy is about much more than production on Saturdays.
Kanu carries a 3.42 cumulative GPA and is scheduled to graduate in December with a degree in Communication and Leadership. He was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian praised Kanu’s consistency in every part of the program.
“Hero is an incredible team leader, an awesome teammate and an all-around tremendous student-athlete,” Sarkisian said. “He’s as dedicated in the classroom and to his education at Texas as he is as a football player.”
Kanu’s story is also unusual.
A native of Geltendorf, Germany, he didn’t begin playing organized football until 2021 after moving to California to pursue the sport. Since then, he has gone from an inexperienced international prospect to an established SEC defensive lineman.
He has also made giving back a major part of his time in college, hosting free football camps in Germany and France while volunteering with organizations in Austin.
Texas has a strong history with the Campbell Trophy. Trey Moore was a finalist in 2025, Jake Majors reached the finalist stage in 2024, and former Longhorns Dallas Griffin and Sam Acho won the award in 2007 and 2010, respectively.
Kanu still has work ahead if he wants to join that group.
For now, his semifinalist selection adds another accomplishment to a season in which Texas is chasing a championship and Kanu is building a résumé that goes far beyond football.
