The Miami Dolphins, disappointed in the work of pricey No. 1 quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, on Wednesday announced the decision to shift gears in a major way.
This weekend, as the Dolphins play out the string on a lost NFL season, they will start seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers.
The Texas Longhorns product will get his big shot on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
This move comes on the heels of Miami coach Mike McDaniel saying that "everything is on the table" at the quarterback position after a poor outing for Tagovailoa in a 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Said the coach: "We’re trying to determine who will give us the best chance to win. You just really have a standard and when that standard is not being met, something’s got to give and we’re looking for clarity on that because it’s not where I want it to be."
Some might question whether Ewers - who has spent most of the season as the third-string quarterback for the 6-8 Dolphins - is truly the "best way to win.'' ... because former first-round pick Zach Wilson is also on the roster.
But Ewers in the lineup makes sense in another way as the Dolphins now get to explore what he might be able to do on the pro level ...
And whether it might mirror what the Texas native did during his college career, when he started 37 games and led the Longhorns to 27 wins while also recorded 9,128 passing yards and 68 passing touchdowns.
