Matt Comegys tied for sixth at 1-under as No. 8 Texas battled an elite field to finish tied for fifth at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.

FORT WORTH - The fifth-year golfer finished tied for sixth individually at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational, helping No. 8 Texas secure a tie for fifth against one of the strongest fields it will see all season at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth.

Comegys closed with an even-par 70 Tuesday to finish the 54-hole event at 1-under 209, posting rounds of 70, 69 and 70. Only seven players in the 80-player field finished the tournament under par.

It was another strong result in what’s becoming an impressive fall for Comegys. He now owns two top-six finishes in three appearances, including sharing medalist honors earlier this season at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup.

Texas entered the final round within striking distance but couldn’t make a serious charge, closing with an 11-over 291 for a three-day total of 14-over 854.

Junior Daniel Bennett and freshman Sterling Hurd each contributed 3-over 73s Tuesday. Bennett finished tied for 22nd at 5-over 215, while Hurd tied sophomore Adam Villanueva for 26th at 6-over. Villanueva closed with a 75.

Freshman Brooks Harper finished tied for 53rd at 11-over 221.

The competition level made Texas’ finish notable. Fourteen of the 16 teams were ranked inside the national top 25, including seven top-10 programs.

No. 11 Alabama won the tournament at even-par 840, five shots clear of No. 1 Auburn. Texas Tech and North Carolina tied for third at 12-over, two strokes ahead of Texas and Vanderbilt.

Texas Tech’s Adam Bresnu captured medalist honors at 7-under 203 after closing with consecutive rounds of 67, finishing one shot ahead of Georgia’s JD Culbreth. The victory also earned Bresnu an exemption into the 2027 Charles Schwab Challenge.

Comegys couldn’t catch him, but three steady rounds at demanding Colonial reinforced his status as Texas’ early-season leader.

The Longhorns next head overseas for the St Andrews Links Collegiate in Scotland, scheduled for Oct. 12-14.
