The Texas Longhorns baseball pitching staff is already turning heads across college baseball, and two names are leading the charge: Ruger Riojas and Dylan Volantis.
Both Longhorn stars were recently named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List, highlighting just how dominant the duo has been during the opening month of the 2026 season.

For Texas baseball, the early results suggest the Longhorns might have one of the most dangerous pitching rotations in the country.
Riojas has emerged as the clear ace of the staff. The Wimberley, Texas native has been electric on the mound, posting a 1.23 ERA across 22 innings while piling up 42 strikeouts. Opposing hitters have barely been able to make solid contact, managing just a .143 batting average against him so far this season.
Each time Riojas takes the mound, Texas appears to have a legitimate chance to win — exactly what teams expect from a Friday-night starter and a potential National Pitcher of the Year contender.
Meanwhile, Dylan Volantis has quietly built an equally impressive résumé while adjusting to a new role.
The Texas native is navigating his first full season as a starting pitcher, and the transition has been remarkably smooth. Through four appearances, Volantis has recorded a 1.54 ERA with 29 strikeouts, while limiting opponents to a .169 batting average. He has surrendered just four earned runs during that stretch.
Volantis has also become a stabilizing force in the Longhorns’ rotation, helping Texas maintain one of the most efficient pitching staffs in the early weeks of the season.
Of course, the race for college baseball’s top pitching honor is far from settled. Several standout arms across the country are also in the mix, including Miami’s AJ Ciscar, Kansas State veteran Carson Liggett, Mississippi State’s Tomas Valincius, and Kansas junior Mathis Nayral.
But for now, Riojas and Volantis have placed Texas squarely in the national spotlight.
If the Longhorns hope to end their championship drought and chase another College World Series title, the dominance of these two pitchers could ultimately define their season.
