Former Texas Longhorn Scottie Scheffler is still alive at the Masters, but a rare off day at Augusta leaves him needing a weekend charge.
Scottie Scheffler didn’t fall out of the Masters on Friday, but the former Texas Longhorns star definitely gave himself more work to do.
After opening the tournament with a 2-under 70, Scheffler slipped backward in Round 2 with a 2-over 74, leaving him at even par heading into the weekend at Augusta National.
For most players, that kind of round wouldn’t stand out much. For Scheffler, it does.
The world No. 1 has built his reputation on staying steady when the course gets tricky, especially at Augusta, where he already owns two green jackets.
That’s why Friday’s score felt unusual. He was in a position to stay near the top of the leaderboard, but a few costly misses on scoring holes changed the tone of his day.
The biggest damage came on the back nine. Scheffler made mistakes on two of Augusta’s par 5s, the holes where contenders usually make their move.
Instead of picking up shots, he gave them away. That’s a tough way to lose ground at the Masters, especially when the course is already demanding patience on every swing and every putt.
Still, the bigger picture for Texas fans is this: Scheffler is far from done.
He’s through the cut, he’s still within range of making noise, and his game clearly isn’t broken. In fact, this looked more like a frustrating round than a disastrous one.
With a player of his caliber, he doesn’t need much to flip the tournament back in his favor. A clean Saturday can change everything.
Scheffler’s resume says he’s more than capable of making a weekend push. His poise, ball-striking and comfort at Augusta are why he entered the week as one of the favorites in the first place.
So while Friday wasn’t vintage Scottie Scheffler, it also wasn’t the end.
The ex-Longhorn still has two rounds left, and that’s more than enough time for one of golf’s most reliable stars to make this Masters interesting again.
