Texas Longhorns legend Ricky Williams joins the 2026 SEC Football Legends Class, honoring his historic Heisman Trophy career and record-breaking years in Austin.
Nearly three decades after terrorizing college football defenses and rewriting the NCAA record books, Ricky Williams is receiving another prestigious honor for his remarkable career with the Texas Longhorns.
The 1998 Heisman Trophy winner has been selected to the 2026 SEC Football Legends Class, joining 15 other college football icons who will be recognized during Southeastern Conference championship festivities in Atlanta this December.
Williams becomes the third former Texas football player to receive the distinction, following quarterback Vince Young in 2024 and linebacker Derrick Johnson in 2025.
And considering what Williams accomplished wearing burnt orange, his inclusion shouldn't surprise anyone.
From 1995 through 1998, Williams produced one of the most spectacular careers in college football history, finishing with 6,279 rushing yards, 72 rushing touchdowns and an astonishing 46 Texas school records.
But his senior season remains the stuff of Longhorns legend.
After bypassing the NFL Draft to return for one final year in Austin, Williams erupted for 2,124 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns in 1998.
His performance earned him the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award and his second consecutive Doak Walker Award.
Williams also broke Tony Dorsett's 22-year-old NCAA career rushing record during his final regular-season game against Texas A&M.
That moment helped cement his place among the sport's all-time greats.
By the time Williams left Austin, he'd established 21 NCAA records, and Texas eventually retired his iconic No. 34 jersey.
His professional career wasn't bad, either.
Selected fifth overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 1999 NFL Draft, Williams accumulated 10,009 rushing yards and 66 touchdowns over 11 NFL seasons with New Orleans, Miami and Baltimore.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015.
Williams joins an impressive 2026 SEC Legends Class featuring former Alabama head coach Nick Saban, Oklahoma Heisman winner Billy Sims, Georgia coach Mark Richt, LSU defensive back Patrick Peterson and Texas A&M standout Sam Adams.
The recognition is particularly interesting considering Williams played his entire collegiate career before Texas joined the SEC in 2024.
His achievements came during the Longhorns' Southwest Conference and Big 12 years, but his impact on college football clearly transcends conference affiliations.
The 16-member class will be celebrated Friday, December 4, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta before receiving recognition ahead of the SEC Championship Game on Saturday, December 5, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
For Texas fans, the honor is another opportunity to revisit the extraordinary career of a player whose combination of power, speed and durability defined an era.
Williams once described his decision to return for his senior season with a simple explanation:
“I came back to have fun.”
Nearly 30 years later, the numbers, trophies and memories continue to tell the story.
Ricky Williams wasn't simply one of the greatest running backs in Texas history. He was one of college football's greatest, period.
