Even with the 2026 college football season still a long way off, the Texas Longhorns continue to work quietly behind the scenes to strengthen their roster.
That effort paid off Saturday when Texas landed a commitment from defensive lineman Elijah Ali, adding another piece to an already evolving defensive front.
Ali, a California native out of St. Plus X - St. Matthias Academy, may not carry a national ranking, but his recruitment tells a different story. He drew interest and offers from several programs, including Temple, San Diego State, Delaware State, and Sacramento State, before ultimately choosing Austin. For Ali, the decision came down to opportunity and belief.
Texas offered both.
In a conversation with 247Sports, Ali explained how transformative his late-January visit to Austin proved to be.
He described the experience as eye-opening, particularly his time spent with defensive coaches Will Muschamp and Kenny Baker. The meetings, the structure of the program, and the long-term vision sold him on what Texas could offer beyond just playing time.
That trust matters, especially for a player who understands nothing will be handed to him. Ali arrives knowing he’ll need to earn his reps, but he also joins a defensive unit that is being reshaped with competition in mind under head coach Steve Sarkisian.
The Longhorns have been aggressive in reinforcing the defensive line. Through the transfer portal, Texas added Ian Geffrard and Zion Williams, while the incoming freshman class features highly regarded prospects Richard Wesley and Jamario Carlton.
