Texas Longhorns recruiting is starting to look a lot less like a slow burn and a lot more like a summer wildfire.
After a less-than-stellar opening stretch in the 2027 cycle, Steve Sarkisian and his staff have started stacking commitments with real momentum.
The latest hit is Montre Jackson, one of the top cornerback prospects in Texas and another defensive piece who fits exactly what the Longhorns are trying to build for the future.
He’s a top-200 national prospect, the No. 21 cornerback in the 2027 class, the No. 28 player in Texas and the No. 5 cornerback in the state.
For Texas, landing that kind of in-state defensive back is how elite programs keep the machine humming.
And the Longhorns aren’t done hunting.
Jackson gives Texas commitments from two of the top five cornerbacks in the state, with a chance to add even more star power at the position.
That’s the kind of recruiting flex that keeps rivals uncomfortable and gives Sarkisian options when today’s young roster becomes tomorrow’s depth chart battle.
At 6-0 and 180 pounds, Jackson already has the frame college defensive coaches want. Add in track-tested speed, and the appeal becomes pretty obvious.
He’s not just a long corner who looks good getting off the bus. He can run, mirror receivers, stay connected in man coverage and compete through the catch point.
That last part is big.
Modern SEC football doesn’t let cornerbacks hide. They’re going to get targeted, tested and occasionally embarrassed if they can’t play with confidence.
Jackson’s skill set gives Texas a defensive back who can challenge throws instead of just chasing them.
The timing is important, too. Texas has talent at cornerback, but much of it is young and still developing.
By the time Jackson gets to Austin, he could walk into a room with more experience in front of him, but not necessarily a locked door.
If he develops quickly, early rotational snaps won’t be out of the question.
That’s the point of this commitment. Texas isn’t just recruiting for headlines.
Sarkisian is trying to create a roster that can survive attrition, NFL departures and the weekly street fight of SEC play.
