Texas football offers 2028 defensive lineman Josiah Taylor, a 315-pound Florida prospect, as Steve Sarkisian looks to strengthen the Longhorns' recruiting class.
Texas football is taking its recruiting battle into SEC territory, extending a scholarship offer to one of Florida's emerging defensive line prospects as Steve Sarkisian continues assembling his 2028 recruiting class.
Josiah Taylor, a 6-4, 315-pound defensive lineman from Vero Beach High School, announced Tuesday that the Longhorns had entered his recruitment.
"Blessed to receive a offer from university of Texas," Taylor wrote on social media.
The offer adds another major program to an increasingly competitive recruiting battle involving several Power Four schools.
Taylor is rated as a three-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings, checking in at No. 479 nationally, No. 55 among defensive linemen and No. 62 overall in Florida.
Those rankings might not immediately grab headlines, but Taylor's combination of size, developing technique and experience against Florida competition has attracted considerable attention.
During his sophomore season in 2025, Taylor recorded 34 tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks, helping Vero Beach finish 14-1.
His recruitment accelerated during the summer when Baylor, Boston College, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Florida extended scholarship offers.
Mississippi State joined the competition earlier this month.
The biggest obstacle for Texas could be keeping Taylor away from Gainesville.
Florida has invested considerable effort in recruiting the defensive lineman, hosting him for multiple unofficial visits in September. Recruiting projections currently favor the Gators, giving the Longhorns work to do if they intend to become serious contenders.
Taylor has also spoken enthusiastically about Florida's interest, previously identifying the Gators as an early leader.
But Sarkisian has already demonstrated that Texas can recruit successfully in the Sunshine State.
Four-star quarterback Neimann Lawrence, who attends American Heritage in Plantation, Florida, became the Longhorns' first commitment in the 2028 cycle.
Last week, four-star running back Micah Rhodes joined him, flipping his allegiance from former rival Oklahoma to Texas.
Rhodes, a standout at Klein Oak High School near Houston, gives the Longhorns an intriguing offensive foundation alongside Lawrence.
Adding a prospect like Taylor would help establish an early defensive presence in the class.
Texas has increasingly prioritized building depth along the line of scrimmage, particularly as the program navigates the physical demands of SEC competition.
At 315 pounds, Taylor possesses the size to potentially develop into an interior defensive contributor, although his long-term collegiate role will depend on his continued development.
The next meaningful step for Texas would be bringing Taylor to Austin for a campus visit.
For now, Florida appears to have the recruiting advantage.
But with the Longhorns officially involved, Taylor's recruitment just became another SEC recruiting battle worth watching.
