Texas crushed Mississippi State 31-3 but remained No. 11 in the latest Coaches Poll, sitting behind Ohio State despite the Buckeyes' loss to USC.

Apparently, beating an SEC opponent by 28 points wasn't enough to convince college football coaches that the Texas Longhorns belong in the nation's top 10.

Texas remained No. 11 in Sunday's updated US LBM Coaches Poll despite dismantling Mississippi State 31-3 Saturday night at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

The Longhorns improved to 6-2 overall, but their position remained unchanged even as several teams ahead of them benefited from significant movement in the rankings.

And perhaps the most frustrating development for Texas fans? Ohio State dropped eight spots after losing 30-18 to USC but still landed one position ahead of the Longhorns at No. 10.

Both teams have identical 6-2 records, and Texas owns a 24-23 victory over the Buckeyes earlier this season.

Yet the coaches continue to favor Ohio State.

Texas received 1,057 voting points, compared with Ohio State's 1,101, leaving the Longhorns 44 points short of cracking the top 10.

The lack of movement comes after one of Texas' most impressive defensive performances of the season.

Steve Sarkisian's team held Mississippi State to just 187 total yards, recorded seven sacks and forced multiple turnovers. Linebacker Rasheem Biles delivered a spectacular individual performance with three sacks, four tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

Arch Manning completed 16 of 20 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns, although the Longhorns' rushing attack continued to struggle, producing only 60 yards.

The victory gave Sarkisian his 100th career win as a head coach and improved Texas to 3-2 in SEC play.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Miami retained the No. 1 position after surviving a 38-35 scare against North Carolina. Georgia climbed to No. 2 following its 27-8 victory over Florida, while Indiana, Utah and UCLA completed the top five.

Notre Dame, Kentucky, BYU, Alabama and Ohio State rounded out the top 10.

The SEC placed eight teams in the latest poll, including No. 9 Alabama, No. 12 Ole Miss, No. 15 LSU and No. 16 Tennessee.

Texas Tech moved up to No. 13 after beating Arizona 34-26, while USC made one of the week's biggest jumps, climbing from No. 25 to No. 17 following its upset of Ohio State.

For Texas, however, the biggest rankings development is still ahead.

The College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first rankings Tuesday, November 3. Unlike the Coaches Poll, those rankings will ultimately determine which teams qualify for the 12-team playoff.

The Longhorns have already demonstrated they can beat elite competition, but losses to Oklahoma and Florida continue to complicate their postseason outlook.

Saturday's victory showed Texas can dominate defensively.

Now the Longhorns need to convince the playoff committee that their complete resume deserves more respect than the coaches have given it.
