Texas football is still in the hunt for 2027 safety Junior Tuupo after the Alabama standout trimmed his list to five national contenders.

Texas football remains firmly in the mix for one of the more intriguing defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting cycle.

Junior Tuupo, a rising safety from Thompson High School in Alabama, has trimmed his recruitment to five schools, and Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns are still alive alongside Auburn, Alabama, Oregon and Indiana.

That’s a notable development for Texas, which continues to build momentum with its 2027 recruiting class.

The Longhorns already hold commitments from several highly regarded prospects, and adding Tuupo would give them another athletic piece in the secondary.

Texas has already assembled a group featuring Easton Royal, Cameron Hall, Derwin Fields, Karnell James, JT Geraci, Cade Haug, Ty Knutson and Jackson Cook, helping position the class among the nation’s best.

Tuupo’s profile keeps growing because of the production he put on tape last season. During the 2025 high school campaign, he stuffed the stat sheet with 66 tackles, five tackles for loss, seven pass breakups and three interceptions.

Those numbers show why major programs across the country are continuing to stay involved in his recruitment.

He’s the kind of defender who seems to find the football, whether he’s stepping into run support or making plays in coverage.

The Longhorns have clearly made an impression. Tuupo recently spent multiple days in Austin, giving Texas valuable face time as his recruitment starts to tighten.

That visit now looks even more important with the field narrowing and decisions becoming more focused.

At the moment, Tuupo is viewed as one of the top defensive prospects in Alabama and a player whose ranking could still climb as he enters the next stage of his prep career.

For Texas, staying in his top group is a good sign. The next challenge will be turning that interest into real momentum as Sarkisian and his staff continue pushing to strengthen an already promising 2027 class.
