Five-star cornerback John Meredith III, one of the biggest names in the 2027 recruiting class, has Texas in his final three ahead of his June 19 commitment announcement.
That’s not just good news for Steve Sarkisian. It’s a chance to make a statement.
Meredith, a North Crowley standout, has trimmed his recruitment to Texas, Alabama and Texas A&M.
That’s a heavyweight final group, and it tells you everything about the level of player we’re talking about.
Programs don’t fight this hard over “good” prospects. They fight this hard over potential future stars.
According to 247Sports, Meredith is ranked as the No. 1 cornerback in the 2027 class, the top player in Texas and the No. 4 overall prospect nationally. That’s the kind of profile that changes the feel of a recruiting class the second he jumps in.
Before narrowing things down, Meredith pulled offers from some of the sport’s biggest brands, including Ohio State, Miami, Auburn, Arizona State, LSU and Michigan.
So, yes, this is a true national recruitment. But with Texas and Texas A&M both in the final three, it has also turned into another heated in-state recruiting battle with serious SEC flavor.
For the Longhorns, landing Meredith would be massive for a 2027 class that’s already off to a strong start.
Texas already has a five-star commitment from wide receiver Easton Royal, along with four-star pledges from Kasi Currie, Cameron Hall, Karnell James, Brock Williams and Derwin Fields.
Adding Meredith would give Sarkisian another blue-chip centerpiece and send a pretty clear message: Texas isn’t just trying to win the state. It’s trying to own it.
Meredith has also backed up the ranking with production and playmaking ability. In national showcase action, he recorded an interception and a tackle, flashing the instincts and ball skills that have made scouts view him as the top defensive back in his class.
Now the wait gets real.
Alabama can sell history. Texas A&M can sell staying close to home with an SEC rebuild. But Texas can sell momentum, fit and a fast-rising 2027 class.
By the end of the week, the Longhorns will know whether they’ve landed one of the biggest recruiting wins of the cycle.
