No. 14 Texas volleyball rolls past Georgia in straight sets behind Torrey Stafford's 15 kills, setting up a nationally televised rivalry showdown with Texas A&M.
Texas volleyball is finding its rhythm at exactly the right time, and the Longhorns couldn't have delivered a much stronger statement heading into one of their biggest rivalry matches of the season.
No. 14 Texas overwhelmed Georgia in straight sets Wednesday night at Gregory Gymnasium, winning 25-21, 25-15 and 25-13 behind another impressive performance from Torrey Stafford.
The victory marked Texas' third sweep in four matches and improved the Longhorns to 11-7 overall and 7-3 in SEC play.
More importantly, it continued a stretch of increasingly dominant volleyball with defending national champion Texas A&M coming to Austin on Sunday.
Stafford led the offensive attack with 15 kills, eight digs and a .312 hitting percentage.
The standout outside hitter has now recorded double-digit kills in 14 consecutive matches.
Henley Anderson added 11 kills while hitting .409, extending her own double-digit kills streak to eight matches. Anderson also delivered two service aces, matching her career high.
But this wasn't simply a two-player performance.
Cari Spears contributed eight kills and a match-high four blocks, while Taylor Harvey delivered six kills on an outstanding .625 hitting percentage.
Texas finished with a .366 team hitting percentage, holding Georgia to just .145.
The defensive performance was particularly impressive considering the Bulldogs entered the match with one of college volleyball's most dangerous offensive weapons.
Georgia's Bianna Muoneke arrived averaging a nation-leading 5.11 kills per set. Texas limited her to eight kills across three sets, well below her usual production.
The Longhorns controlled the opening set despite Georgia briefly closing within 16-15.
Stafford took over when it mattered, finishing the frame with eight kills before delivering the decisive point.
Texas never allowed the Bulldogs to generate sustained momentum afterward.
The second set turned into a comfortable 25-15 victory, and the Longhorns were even more convincing in the third, closing out Georgia 25-13.
Ramsey Gary anchored the backcourt with 13 digs, while Rella Binney distributed 20 assists and Genevieve Harris added 16.
Texas also extended its perfect all-time record against Georgia to 10-0.
Now comes a considerably bigger test.
The Longhorns welcome Texas A&M to Gregory Gymnasium on Sunday, November 1, for the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown.
The match begins at noon CT and will be televised nationally on ABC.
The Aggies enter the weekend as defending national champions, adding another layer of significance to an already heated rivalry.
For Texas, Sunday's showdown represents an opportunity to turn a promising stretch into a signature victory.
And after three sweeps in four matches, the Longhorns are giving fans plenty of reasons to believe they're ready for the challenge.
