The Texas vs. Texas A&M rivalry just got an added layer of intrigue.
Former Texas Longhorns guard Jordan Pope announced that he is committed to Texas A&M out of the transfer portal.
Pope was granted an injunction to get him a fifth season, but it comes when there is no roster spot available in Austin. He has taken the opportunity to continue playing SEC basketball and growing his potential NBA Draft stock.
The Oakley, Calif. native spent two seasons as a regular starter for the Longhorns, even while overlapping the coaching tenures of Rodney Terry and Sean Miller.
Pope started 35 games in 2025-26 after appearing in just 23 the season prior. He averaged 13.1 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 39.9 percent from the field.
Pope was instrumental in Texas' run to the Sweet 16 last season. He logged over 30 minutes in each of the Horns' four NCAA tournament games and scored in double figures the final three games of the year.
His season-high of 30 points came against another hated Longhorns rival, the Oklahoma Sooners on March 7 in Austin.
Against the Aggies, Pope was impressive as well. He scored 17 points in each of the matchups with A&M last season: Jan. 17 in Austin and Feb. 28 in College Station.
Pope first got to Texas after two seasons at Oregon State, where he had career averages of 15.3 points per game on 44 percent shooting and 37 percent from 3-point range.
An All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention as a sophomore with the Beavers, Pope currently still holds the Moody Center single-game scoring record of 42 points from his career-best night in burnt orange against New Orleans on Dec. 19 of last season.
Marcus Spears Jr.'s reclassification from the 2027 high school class up to 2026 made things difficult for Miller to hold spots for potential returners who won legal battles this summer.
Chendall Weaver, another veteran Longhorns guard, is committed to Houston after receiving an additional year of eligibility.
Texas has a maximum 15 players on its roster, including five transfers and seven freshmen. Matas Vokietaitis is the lone returner from last year's Sweet 16 team.
Pope joins an Aggies program led by second-year head coach Bucky McMillan, who received a contract extension last year after A&M went 22-12 and 11-7 in SEC play.
Texas, who had a record of 21-15 and 9-9 in conference action, hosts Texas A&M on either Feb. 16 or 17, then closes the regular season in College Station on March 6.
