A new program record and a vulgar celebration described the week for edge rusher Colin Simmons.
Texas defensive end Colin Simmons goes into the Longhorns' bye week with a new program record, but not any hardware from the Southeastern Conference to show for it.
The nation's top-ranked team improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in SEC play, with Simmons leading a defense that posted 10 sacks against Tennessee.
Simmons was originally credited with 5.0 takedowns of Volunteers quarterback Faizon Brandon, but that number got upgraded by half a sack this week, officially giving Simmons the Texas single-game record.
However, the junior pass rusher was not named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week nor the Defensive Lineman of the Week, much to the surprise of many.
While there were other standout performances across the conference's first slate of league play - such as DPOTW Georgia linebacker Chris Cole and DLOTW Missouri lineman Daedon Hopkins - it's not impossible to suggest Simmons' viral moment having an impact on his lack of candidacy for this recognition.
After one of Simmons' sacks early in the game, he celebrated by pantomiming urinating on the field in Knoxville, which resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty against the Longhorns.
Coach Steve Sarkisian and Simmons denounced the actions in their postgame remarks.
Simmons didn't go the entire week without recognition for his play more than his posing.
The Dallas native won all three major national player of the week awards: from the Chuck Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Walter Camp Award organizations.
This is the first time in Simmons' career that he received each of the weekly honors.
As for the Longhorns' mindsets after the first week of SEC play, Sarkisian urges that his program's expectations for success are a recipe for these types of wins on the road.
"We're kinda used to this environment," Sarkisian said, whose Longhorns have the most ranked wins of any program over the last three seasons.
"I know we may not always be our best or play super clean football - and I get it, we're held to a different standard than I think other places. But we win big games around here; we do."
