The Texas Longhorns' recruiting machine is revving up again, and one of the biggest names in the 2027 recruiting class is officially heading to Austin.
Five-star cornerback John Meredith III, widely regarded as one of the most electrifying defensive backs in the country, has scheduled an official visit to Texas on June 6–7, giving Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns coaching staff a massive opportunity to make their pitch to the elite defensive prospect.
For Texas football recruiting, this is exactly the type of battle Sarkisian wants to be in.
Meredith isn’t just another blue-chip prospect; he’s a national prize. According to 247Sports rankings, the North Crowley High standout is rated the No. 1 cornerback in the 2027 class, the top overall player in Texas, and the No. 5 player in the nation regardless of position.
In other words, everybody wants him.
The recruiting war surrounding Meredith reads like a College Football Playoff lineup. Along with Texas, he has locked in official visits to Alabama, Texas A&M, and Ohio State, three programs that routinely battle for the nation’s best defensive talent.
That means Sarkisian’s staff will need to bring their A-game when Meredith steps onto campus this summer.
And there’s a reason so many programs are chasing him.
Meredith has built a reputation as a shutdown defender who makes life miserable for opposing quarterbacks. His physical coverage skills, instincts in the secondary, and ability to erase receivers from the game have turned him into one of the most talked-about defensive prospects in the country.
The national spotlight has already followed him, too. Meredith recently competed in the Under Armour All-America Game, and his performance during the 2025 season earned MaxPreps Junior All-American honors.
Texas is already assembling a strong 2027 recruiting class, headlined by four-star prospects Easton Royal and Cameron Hall, along with a group that includes Cade Haug, Karnell James, Ty Knutson, and JT Geraci.
But landing Meredith would instantly elevate the class into elite territory.
If Sarkisian can win this recruiting showdown, the Longhorns secondary could gain a future lockdown corner ... and the entire 2027 class could vault toward the top of the national rankings.
