The No. 16 Texas Tech Red Raiders left no doubt Wednesday night, rolling past Colorado Buffaloes 78-44 at United Supermarkets Arena to complete the season sweep in emphatic fashion.
JT Toppin was the difference. The junior forward tied his career high with 18 rebounds and added 16 points to record his 15th double-double of the season. By halftime, Toppin already had 11 boards, setting the tone for a dominant night on the glass.
He finished with four offensive rebounds, three blocks and two steals, continuing a breakout campaign in which he’s averaging 21.5 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.
While Toppin controlled the paint, Donovan Atwell lit it up from deep. The sharpshooter poured in 20 points, knocking down 6-of-10 from three-point range. It marked his fourth game this season with six or more made threes while shooting at least 60 percent. Atwell now has 87 made threes this year and sits just seven shy of matching Cory Carr’s single-season program record of 94.
Christian Anderson contributed 14 points and seven assists, while Jaylen Petty added 12 points for his 12th double-figure performance of the year. The Red Raiders hit 12 3-pointers as a team and dominated the hustle categories, owning a 47-30 rebounding advantage and holding a staggering 21-0 edge in second-chance points.
Defensively, Tech swarmed Colorado with nine blocked shots and forced a season-high 16 turnovers, converting them into easy opportunities.
Now 18-6 overall and 8-3 in Big 12 play, the Red Raiders will face their toughest test yet with a road trip to No. 1 Arizona on Saturday before continuing their swing at Arizona State.
