When Grant McCasland stepped to the microphone Friday afternoon, he didn’t sound nervous. He sounded grateful ... and ready.
No. 15 Texas Tech Red Raiders will host No. 11 BYU Cougars on Saturday night at United Supermarkets Arena, a matchup that feels every bit as big as the rankings suggest. Tech enters 3-1 in Big 12 play, undefeated at home, while BYU rolls into Lubbock riding a 13-game winning streak and sitting 4-0 in league action.
“What a great time to be at the USA,” McCasland said, smiling as he talked about a packed doubleheader and the return of students to campus. “It’s rare you get this much consecutive basketball in Lubbock.”
The Big 12, as McCasland put it, doesn’t care about vibes or feelings. It cares about preparation, toughness, and whether you can win ugly when the game demands it. That’s why he respects BYU so much - they find ways to win, regardless of circumstance.
One area where Texas Tech has grown quickly is on the defensive end. Early-season effort was there, but execution lagged. That’s changed.
“What we’ve finally merged is effort and competitiveness with understanding,” McCasland said.
Anchored by JT Toppin and Christian Anderson, the Red Raiders are communicating better, breaking down less, and turning scouting reports into action instead of theory. I
n Big 12 play, that difference shows up fast — usually on the scoreboard.
BYU presents a unique challenge, particularly on the glass. The Cougars are the league’s top offensive rebounding team, while Tech prides itself on cleaning up the defensive boards. Whichever side wins that battle could control the tempo — and the outcome.
Then there’s freshman phenom AJ Dybantsa. McCasland didn’t just praise his talent, he praised the person.
“He treats everyone like you’re part of his team,” McCasland said. “He doesn’t have to score to impact winning.”
Saturday night will be loud, physical, and unforgiving — exactly how Big 12 basketball is supposed to be. With students back, momentum building, and two ranked teams trading strengths, United Supermarkets Arena should feel less like a gym and more like a proving ground.
Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT on ESPN. Bring your voice. Tech plans to bring everything else.
